During the titanic battle of Isurava on 29 August 1942, moment when the Japanese were poised to surge through a hole in the Australian defences, Private Bruce Kingsbury charged straight at the attackers, firing his Bren machine gun from his hip. He scattered the enemy, killing perhaps 30 of them, throwing them into disarray and allowing the Diggers to plug their defensive hole.
Kingsbury was killed by a sniper as he reloaded his gun. His selfless valour saw him awarded the only Victoria Cross in the Kokoda campaign.
Our Kokoda Diggers are all in their 90s and they’re fading. We can’t let their stories fade with them.
Help us to tell Bruce's story.
